Cross-Cultural Parenting
With Parent Educator Waganesh Zeleke, Ph.D., Candidate
Parents from all cultural backgrounds want to raise children who will be compassionate, well-adjusted contributors to society. But family values and parenting practices are not the same in all cultures. This can cause stress and challenges for parents raising children in a new country. Our cross-cultural parenting classes are designed to help parents raise their children confidently in the American context. Class topics include immigration and parenting, stress management for parents, children’s developmental stages and needs, self-esteem and self-confidence, enhancing children’s social skills, developing effective communication with your children, and positive discipline.

Inter-Cultural Adoptive Parents Support Group

Are you the parent of an inter-cultural adopted child? Almost any adoption concern that you have encountered has been faced by someone else. By joining this group you and your family will gain support and education from the experiences of others. The goal is to provide information, resources, emotional support, and guidance to parents meeting the challenges of adoption across racial and cultural lines.

About Waganesh Zeleke
Waganesh is a Ph.D., Candidate student in Developmental Psychology and Mental Health Counseling (Individualized Interdisciplinary program) at the University of Montana. She holds two Master’s degrees in Intercultural Youth and Family Development and Special Education from the University of Montana and Addis Ababa University, respectively, and a B.A degree in Pedagogical Science from Bahir Dar University. As a Predoctoral Counseling Psychology Intern here at Family First, Waganesh provides individual and group consultations, and a cross-cultural parenting class to parents who are parenting or will parent a child adopted from another culture or with a cultural background different from their own, and immigrant families who raise a child in a new culture. Waganesh is originally from Ethiopia.
